Which Eczema Treatment Should You Choose?

By on February 19, 2013

Before talking about an eczema treatment, let’s define “eczema” first. Defined as the inflammation of the skin, eczema is often found in infants although the problem clears itself up around three years of age.

It has been observed that people suffer from eczema at one point in their lives and clears out automatically while others will have to contend with the condition throughout their lives.

There are several types of eczema with the most common one being atopic dermatitis. Those who constantly suffer from allergies like asthma and hay fever are also susceptible to this disease.

The ultimate cause of the disease in unknown but it is believed that a combination of faulty immune system plus a skin defect triggers the occurrence of the problem.

Unfortunately, there is no set solution to get rid of eczema once and for all. Still, there are now several eczema treatments being used nowadays, and I’ve also written an article specifically on eczema creams.

Moisturizers
A common eczema treatment, the use of moisturizer is popular simply because eczema causes dryness in the skin. Moisture hydrates the skin which then prevents cracking and the lack of comfort.

Currently, moisturizers made especially for eczema sufferers are available in the market containing vital ingredients as well as the necessary “thickness” that is vital to battle eczema symptoms.eczema treatment

Light Therapy

Since eczema, like psoriasis, reflects mostly on the skin, then the introduction of light treatment is not uncommon. The most common types are UVA and Narrow Band UVA wherein the patient is exposed to specific amounts within a certain time frame.

However, the problem with this eczema treatment is that it is a risk by itself. UVA and Narrow Band UVA have been said to produce severe skin burns and are also believed to be one of the causes of skin cancer.

Oral Medications
When all else fails, then oral medication is the ultimate choice as an psoriasis. One of the most common is psoralen which is ingested as a form or “support” for UVB treatment.

This medication makes the skin more susceptible to UVB light, therefore allowing light therapy sessions to be shorter and less intense.

Home Remedies
Of course, there are also popular eczema home remedies that are still being used today. Most of these address the symptoms and make the lives of sufferers easier. One of the most common is oatmeal as a way to battle the itching of the skin.

In fact, oatmeal is one of the ingredients used in eczema lotions and moisturizers.

Good bacteria in the form of Lactobacillus found in yogurt also show possibilities in preventing the onset of eczema. Usually ingested orally instead of applied directly to the skin, this treatment is not applicable for those who have severe cases of eczema.

Taking a bath in sea water is also considered a treatment, mainly because the liquid contains antiseptic properties. In fact, the Dead Sea is popular for this type of treatment although the pain one feels when being submerged in salt water during the onset of eczema is a big deterrent for sufferers.

No matter what treatment a person chooses for eczema, it is best to first consult a doctor before ingestion or application.

On top of the suggestions given above, you might want to consider Dermasis by Revitol, a popular over-the-counter cream.
